A fifth grade teacher at Garfield Elementary in Boise is putting Idaho on the map. She is one of only five recipients of a national award.

It's the National Education Association's Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence. Sonia Galaviz was recognized at Timberline High School Thursday during a teacher conference. She is excited to share the award with her students.

"They know that their teacher is invested in them. Hopefully, they know I care and that they're an extension of my own family for the year," Galaviz said. "I'm thrilled to be recognized by the NEA."

Galaviz is now up for the top spot to possibly represent the entire country. She will find out who wins when she travels to Washington D.C. in Feb.
