October is National Cyber Security Month and the Better Business Bureau says it's a good time to take steps to secure your identity. BBB is offering free document shredding and electronic recycling this month to help Treasure Valley residents stay safe.

"Shredding is one great way to prevent identity theft, which regularly tops the Federal Trade Commissions’ list of top consumer complaints year in and year out. And it’s a problem that isn’t going away any time soon," BBB's Dale Dixon said.

BBB is teaming up with Western Records, Shred It and Computers for Kids to offer a Free Shed Day this Saturday, October 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the College of Western Idaho Micron building in Nampa.

"Shred any document that has any type of identifying information -- name, address, phone, date of birth. Of course, be sure it’s not a document you need to keep. Time frames vary for different documents. You want to hang on to things like tax filings. Once you compare receipts to credit statements, you’re clear to shred. Destroy the junk mail as soon as you can, don’t throw it away," Dixon said.
