Ahead of this weekend's air show at Gowen Field, 6 On Your Side's very own Karen Lehr was selected to fly with the U.S.A.F. Thunderbirds.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to say the least, as she and pilot Lt. Col. Kevin Walsh spent 45 minutes in a restricted military fly space performing the acrobatic loops and rolls the aerial squadron is known for.

The two maxed out at 9.1 Gs over the Owyhee mountains in an F-16 Flying Falcon fighter jet.

Each aircraft is worth nearly $30 million, and is capable of breaking the sound barrier and flying above 50,000 feet.

The Thunderbirds are in town for the Gowen Thunder 2017 air show, along with the Royal Canadian Snow Birds.

Aerial performances from both groups are planned for each afternoon.

The event is free to the public, Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
