Okay, okay, I get it - not everyone likes this "holiday for greeting card companies to make a whole lot of money off of lovey-dovey, lusty teens"... Either way - if you love or you hate the holiday - I'm passing on some DIY present and treat ideas for Valentine’s Day. I mean, even if you don’t have a significant other, ie. “Sweetie” in your life, there’s got to be someone you love, right?!
I found some “pinspiration” for this beloved (or loathed) holiday on Pinterest… and these are things that anyone can at least L-U-V, even if it’s not full-blown LOVE.
First, there are several pins and blogs on this one: Customizing a dollar store (or thrift store) mug with Sharpie markers, and then baking them to make the marker last “4EVER.”
Well, I read through several of these posts, and found that it doesn’t always work. The thing you DON’T want to do is put the finished product in the dishwasher; you would be tempting fate, and will likely wash off all of your hard work! These artsy mugs will be forever banned to the “hand wash” only line, so do keep that in mind before you put in hours of your time to create the perfect dish.
Here’s a blog about how to go about doing this project with Sharpie markers, from “A Beautiful Mess: a blog by Elsie and Emma.”
BUT, if you’re VERY dedicated, and you want the “<3-U-4EVER” version, try this method from “Mallory Makes Things.”
I will note here, I had fun making my mugs with Sharpies, but I’m already noticing that they will suffer wear and tear. Oh well! It’s the thought that counts, right?! Plus, regardless of the design, unless they drop the mug, the recipient of the gift will always have something to, at least, drink out of.
NOW, if you need something sweet to fill your mug with, but you can never seem to find your “Baking for Dummies” cookbook, then this is the treat to try...
Here are the complete instructions, and credit due to “So Wonderful, So Marvelous.”
It’s the same concept with both of the “recipes,” but I did the Hershey Hug version, to fit in with the V-Day theme.
The best tip I can give you with these treats is to make them in a pan that is small enough to move directly into the fridge. These will need to cool to “set up,” before you even attempt to LOOK at them… they are very fragile (and messy) until they harden.
Hopefully, these are treats and crafts that you’ll just L-O-V-E. Happy Valentine’s Day!
