Movie reviews for Christmas Eve 2012
(Les Miserables – Universal – Rated PG-13)
With a jaw-dropping, heartbreaking performance from an amazing Anne Hathaway, who I think gives the single best performance by anyone this year, Les Miserables is a sweeping, wonderful, epic musical that gave me chills – the good kind! Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman are also extremely good as is the entire cast. It has a great look, great story and there is hardly a word spoken. It is immersive, grimy, emotional, overwhelming and enormous…and one of the year's very best!

(This is 40 – Universal – Rated R)
Oh, how I loved This is 40. A sequel of sorts to Knocked Up, it is raunchy, funny, heartwarming and real. While much of the humor will be missed by those younger than 30, or who haven’t had families, those who find themselves outside those categories, will appreciate this film. Life tends to be free form and so does this film. It meanders around a bit. It is middle age with all its ups and downs and in all its glory. I’m looking forward to This is 50!

(Silver Linings Playbook – The Weinstein Company – Rated R)
With quirky performances that worm their way into your heart, Silver Linings Playbook is tremendous. I was especially impressed with Bradley Cooper, who breaks out of the vanilla roles he mostly plays, while Jennifer Lawrence gives another award worthy performance. It revolves around a dysfunctional family dealing with many problems, mostly the release from an institution of their mentally ill son. This romantic dramedy delivers big laughs, but hovers over a sense of darkness. It is fun and delightful.

(The Guilt Trip – Paramount – Rated PG-13)
In The Guilt Trip, the pairing of Seth Rogen and Barbara Streisand isn't necessarily a match made in heaven. Forced and overbearing at times, There are less laughs than you might think. Mostly mild guffaws. Streisand fans will love it, but I didn’t. I didn’t hate it either…it was just meh.
