Dr. Gavin Powell, a dermatologist from the Dermatology and Laser Center of Nampa, has some keys that will help keep your skin protected, and heal it if winter has already taken its toll.

First, avoiding frequent use of hot water can actually keep the skin on your hands from getting damaged.  If you need to wash your hands frequently, try using some waterless handwashes or sanitizers.

Second, use mild soaps.  Dr. Powell suggests Dove soap and Cetaphil gentle cleanser.

Also, thick moisturizers and creams are the best for healing dry skin.  Products like Cerave Cream moisturizer and Cetaphil Restoraderm work well, especially if applied immediately after your bath or shower; they can help keep some of the moisture from your shower inside your skin layers.
