A special vacuum sucks up water from a drenched closet. Luckily that's about all that remains of a fire that spontaneously combusted inside Nampa Christian High School's brand-new gymnasium.
"The good news and the blessing was the sprinkler system caught it as it was supposed to," said Principal Kevin Rex.
According to the Nampa Fire Department a crew finishing the gym floor unintentionally left behind a bag filled with chemicals. Those chemicals reacted and ignited some sawdust, triggering an automatic alarm.
"The sawdust in the bag was likely smoldering for some time before it developed enough heat to provoke the sprinkler system," said Battalion Chief Larry Richardson.
By the time firefighters got there sprinklers had knocked out the blaze, but crews had to open doors to rid the school of smoke.
Rex says the fire won't affect classes when students return next month. He credits that to these sprinklers that reacted when no one was around.
"It's a new building, so it's required," Rex said. "But we learned a lot from the Middleton fire, in terms of how to prepare and have the building ready. I don't think we'll miss a beat. We'll hop back on it."
