Oregon State Police troopers are trying to identify a vehicle and driver believed to have contributed to a critical-injury crash Monday afternoon east of The Dalles. The crash critically injured an elderly Hermiston man -- and witnesses provided what police are calling "a partial description of an unknown Idaho registered vehicle of interest."
About 1:50 p.m. Monday, a 2001 Toyota Camry four-door driven by Chuong Ngoc Du, 69, from Hermiston, was eastbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 98.
According to OSP spokesman Lieutenant Gregg Hastings, "Witnesses say a black late model Nissan Maxima with unknown Idaho license made a quick -- possibly intentional -- move closely in front of the Toyota. Du lost control, crashed through the guardrail and traveled about 30 feet down a rocky embankment. The rear of the Toyota came to rest in a slew on the south side of the freeway with Du critically injured inside the car."
The Nissan was last seen eastbound on the highway. Police say it was believed occupied by two people. The driver was described as "an unknown age white male."
Du was air-ambulanced to the Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland.
Eastbound lanes were closed briefly for so the LifefLight helicopter could land.
