Rows and rows of young trees grow at the Laura Moore Cunningham Arboretum in Boise, waiting to one day join the city's urban forest. It's a forest the city is committed to protecting, and one you can support too.
Boise's one of just a few cities nationwide that grows most of its own trees. The city's namesake literally means "wooded" and city leaders see value in home-grown greenery along streets and in parks.
"Trees do a lot of hard work, shading homes, cleaning air," Boise City Forester Brian Jorgenson said, "Also [the trees we plant along streets] actually pay us 30 cents for every dollar we spend."
City leaders recommend planting a tree of your own, in a yard or through a community group, to help celebrate Arbor Day every day. The city's Parks & Recreation workers also offer classes on care of trees in local public schools and at various times throughout the year.
