Families invited to explore STEM through hands-on learning at Boise State
Families are invited to explore science, technology, engineering and math at STEM Exploration Day from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Boise State. Formerly called Discover Engineering Day, all events are located in the Engineering Complex at 1375 University Drive and are free. No registration is required.
Free parking is available in the Lincoln Parking Garage at Lincoln Avenue and University Drive, across the street from the Student Union Building.
Activities are designed to inform, entertain and inspire. The day includes interaction with students, faculty researchers and industry experts, all in an effort to get children interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Events are designed for K-12 students and include the following:
- Science Competition Day for high school students
- Presentation by astronaut educator Barbara Morgan
- Design a bridge
- Build an edible aquifer
- Experience a wind tunnel
- Learn about super computing
- Build a Bristle Bot
- Build a NASA heat shield
- Build a spool car
- Ride a bicycle generator
- Watch a 15,000-volt demonstration
- See robots in action
- Experience tie dye chromatography
- Learn why “Chemistry is Chool!”
- Build catapults
- Make waves with LIGO
- Play weather Jeopardy
The day is presented by the Boise State colleges of Engineering and Arts and Sciences. Sponsors include the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, Hewlett-Packard, Idaho National Laboratory, Idaho Power, Micron Foundation, United Water and The Whittenberger Foundation.
