Most parents are aware that for most of today's teenagers text messaging comes as easily as breathing. What parents may not be as familiar with is a growing trend called "sexting," which could have dangerous consequences for texting teens.
"Sexting" is the sending of sexually explicit texts or pictures via a cell phone. Jim Kouril, an investigator for Idaho's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force tells Today's Channel 6 News, he sees one or two cases a week in our state. Kouril's job is to search for pornographic material over the Internet and cell phones.
Investigators say Idaho teens who "sext" are usually around age 14 to 16 but they can start even younger than that. Often it's girls sending photos under pressure from a boyfriend or friends. The images might seem private but Idaho criminal investigators say "sexting" can scar a teen's future in a very public way.
"Once you send one of these images, how do you know it doesn't get shared on the Net with a million people?," warns Kouril.
Sexting teenagers can even face criminal charges under the right circumstances.
