BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Idaho Department of Administration Director Mike Gwartney is retiring. Gwartney took the job in June 2007, becoming Gov. Butch Otter's point man in trying to reduce costs, including by limiting government retirees' benefits. The Spokesman-Review reports Gwartney's top assistant will take over on an interim basis.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Three former Idaho State Tax Commission auditors claim the commission has offered people with political influence inappropriate settlements. The Spokesman-Review also reports Democratic state Rep. Shirley Ringo, the plaintiff in a related lawsuit against the Tax Commission, has offered to drop the case - if there's an in-depth investigation.
POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) - Bingham Memorial Hospital in Blackfoot hopes to offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy to veterans dealing with traumatic brain injury as part of a national study to determine the treatment's effectiveness. Veterans would breath pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which allows more oxygen to saturate tissues and possibly increase healing.
POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) - A Pocatello man says his fondness for a 200-pound potbellied pig knows no city limits. Brad Willis and his pig live in a part of the city where swine are classified as livestock and require a permit. Willis asked the city to make an exception, but was denied earlier this month. A councilman says he's willing to reconsider, but makes no promises about a different outcome.
