Man Accused of Trying to Murder Police Chief

Patricia Richmond was fighting back tears when she found out her older brother was accused of trying to kill the Homedale police chief.

"I just have no idea why he would do this. It blows my mind just like my father," said Patricia Richmond.

Police say 24-year old John Wayne Richmond Junior tried to buy a gun from an undercover cop and within 3 days detectives put together a sting operation.

"A sting ultimately involved the exchange of a firearm for a quantity of methamphetamine and at that point Mr. Richmond was taken into custody," said Canyon County Prosecutor John Bujak.

Now Richmond faces a serious charge, soliciting to commit first degree murder. Police say Richmond has been in trouble with the law before.

"He was caught with methamphetamine and packaging meth," said Homedale Police Chief Jeff Eidemiller.

Family members say Richmond has been in and out of jail before and he hasn't talked to them in years.

"When he gets on drugs he just doesn't talk to us," said Patricia Richmond.

This is a first for most police officers in Homedale. They say they're use to being in the line of danger but not when they're intentionally targeted.

"It readjusts your whole life, the way you get ready in the morning, the way you start your car in the morning," said Homedale Police Chief Jeff Eidemiller.

Richmond's bond was set to $1-million dollars.

His next court appearance will be on December 18th.
