Idahoans See Meteor Explosion

People flooded the phone lines Tuesday night as they called 911 trying to figure out what flashed in the middle of the night.

We just saw a large flash of fire go through the sky out in Meridian," said a 911 caller.

"I don't know what just entered the atmosphere but it was huge," said another 911 caller.

"It appeared like a flare like someone shot a flare in the sky. Someone might be in trouble down by the river but I'm not sure," said another 911 caller.

It was actually a meteor and our very own chief meteorologist Scott Dorval also witnessed it.

"I saw a big flaming ball it was bright red and yellow then it burned into a green and for a moment it lit the entire sky up," said the Weather Expert Scott Dorval.

Local astronomers say the meteor was traveling at unbelievable speeds.

"When it entered the atmosphere it entered at a very high rate of speed probably an excess of 100-thousand miles an hour," said a Boise Astronomical Society member Art Martini.

It was even captured in a YouTube video, lighting up a pitch black neighborhood. It was almost a once in a lifetime sight to see.

"This is the only time in my lifetime that I've seen this bright but I've seen about 4 but being a meteorologist I have the tendency to look up at the sky," said Dorval.

There were also reports that people were trying to look for bits and pieces of the meteorite in Salt Lake City. Astronomers say depending on the size of the meteorite it could be worth a few hundred dollars.
