Idaho high school students, along with hundred of professionals who work with adolescents, gathered in Boise for a summit on teen dating violence Tuesday morning.
In 2007 the Idaho Youth Risk Survey discovered more than 13% of high school students reported being physically abused by a boyfriend or girlfriend. 11% say they were forced to have unwanted sex. Organizers say those numbers prove how important summits like the one on Tuesday are.
“We really need to understand that unless we begin to address adolescent dating abuse we’re still going to see increases in domestic violence,” said Kelly Miller, Legal Director for the Idaho Coalition against Sexual & Domestic Violence.
The summit also focused on preventing teens from engaging in other risky behaviors like using drugs and alcohol.
