Veterans and community members paid tribute to fellow servicemen and women with family and friends Wednesday at the Idaho State Veterans Home.
"Performing in extra ordinary duty without regard of hardships and sacrifices. That is what makes America's veterans the strength of our nation," said Lt. Gov. Brad Little.
An 11 bell ceremony, bagpipes, and taps honored those who served our country.
10 men and women received the Spirit of Freedom Service Award for their service and volunteerism at the state veteran home.
Award recipient Ken Smith served in World War Two and showed his courage at a young age, signing up a few months shy of his 17th birthday.
Ken now honors fellow vets, volunteering at the State Veterans Cemetery.
"I just stand at attention and hand salute and when taps have blown, then I retire my hand," said Smith.
He’s saluted more than 900 burials at the cemetery and still takes it to heart, saying every one is as important as the first.
"I have known myself to cry. I get a lot of hugs, thank yous, and a few kisses on the cheek. That makes it all worthwhile," said Smith.
The award ceremony in Boise was one in five around the state.
