Streetcar petition drive launches Thursday

Boise City Council candidate Dave Litster is set to launch his initiative petition on a proposed downtown streetcar system.

Litster says he'll hold a press conference Thursday afternoon at Boise City Hall to officially kick off the petition drive.

If the petition is successful, it would require voter approval before the city could go forward with the multi-million dollar trolley plan.

We recently spoke with Litster about the petition. He says taxpayers should have a say in matter sooner rather than later.

"One of my themes is listening to the people and i believe that through this petition drive we will allow/force the Mayor and the City Council to listen to the people," Litster said.

6500 signatures are needed to force a vote on the issue.

If it's ever approved, the streetcar would run a two mile loop along Main and Idaho streets. The first phase of the project is estimated to cost 60-million dollars.
