Some Clinics On Hold Because of H1N1 Vaccine Shortage

Updated:

Southwest District Health will operate the clinic scheduled on Saturday, October 24th in Canyon County, but re-schedule the clinics slated for Friday, October 23,2009 in Canyon County and Tuesday, October 27, 2009 in Homedale. The Saturday clinic is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., or as long as the supply of vaccine lasts.

The clinic will be held at the former Sportsman's Warehouse, 16865 Marketplace Blvd. in Nampa (I-84 and Karcher Road behind McDonald's). No appointment is necessary and vaccine will be provided on a first-come, first served basis.

"We are forced to cancel the Friday clinic in Canyon County and Tuesday's clinic in Homedale because we are limited by the amount of vaccine received," said Bruce Krosch, Director of Southwest District Health. "We are keeping the priority groups to receive the vaccine the same, so the supply will likely go as quickly as last week," he said.

These H1N1 vaccine clinics are dependent on the quantities of vaccine received from the Centers for Disease Control. Both H1N1 live, attenuated (weakened) flu nasal spray vaccine and H1N1 inactivated vaccine (injections) will be offered to the priority groups as defined by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, as long as vaccine is available.

Priority groups include:

  • Pregnant women
  • People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age
  • Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel
  • Persons between the ages of 6 months and 24 years old
  • People ages of 25 through 64 years of age who are at higher risk for 2009

H1N1 because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.

"People who do not fall into these priority groups should not attend these clinics, so those more at risk can get their vaccine first," said Krosch. "Once we receive an adequate supply of vaccine, we will make it more broadly available to everyone who wants it. We anticipate weekly shipments of vaccine over the next three months," he said.

Krosch recommends that people bring a portable camp chair and blanket to Saturday's clinic and to anticipate long lines.
