Woman & kids robbed of their groceries

Two people face charges after woman and her kids were robbed of their groceries late Monday night.

Garden City Police say they were called to an alleyway behind the Idaho Youth Ranch, on Chinden Blvd., around 9:15 pm, for reports of an armed robbery.

Once on scene, officers chased one of the suspects, a 16-year-old boy, on foot. He was captured several blocks away. The teenager was wanted out of Cassia County and is listed as a runaway, police said.

The 16-year-old is now being held at the Ada County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of Robbery, Providing False Information to Police, Obstruct and Delay, Resisting Arrest and four outstanding warrants.

Officers also arrested a second person, 42-year-old Richard Ortega, of Garden City. He was booked into the Ada County Jail on charges of Providing False Information to Police and an outstanding warrant.

Police tell Today's 6 News the victims, a woman and her two children, ages 11 and 15, were robbed of their groceries as they walked towards their home. The 15-year-old was battered, but did not require medical attention, police said.

Garden City Detectives are now following up on the case.
