BURLEY, Idaho (AP) - Some members of the Burley City Council say they don't want to chip in for a lobbying effort by Cassia County to bring a federal prison to Malta.
Commissioners from Cassia and Minidoka counties have voted to hire New West Strategies, a consulting firm co-founded by former U.S. Sen. Larry Craig, to help lure a proposed federal prison to the region. The firm will be paid $5,000 a month plus a monthly travel budget of $500, The Times-News reported.
There's been some talk of cities in the region chipping in for the bill. But Burley Mayor Jon Anderson says the city council has not met to discuss the matter, and that the effort is not a city project.
