LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) - The U.S. Department of Education has handed out prestigious awards to two Idaho public schools.
The department issued its 2009 Blue Ribbon Awards to Webster Elementary School in Lewiston and Camas County Elementary-Junior High School in Fairfield.
Webster Principal Craig Lenzmeier tells the Lewiston Tribune the award shows what can happen when parents, teachers and volunteers commit to working hard.
Only 17 schools in Idaho have won the award since the program began in 1982.
The award honors public and private schools that are academically superior, made dramatic gains in student achievement or helped close gaps in achievement among minority or disadvantaged children.
Webster students scored at least in the top 10% in Idaho on state achievement tests and had at least 40% of its disadvantaged children show improved test scores.
