BOISE, Idaho (AP) - The U.S. Air Force is bombarding an invasive, nonnative grass to keep it from overrunning 1 of its training ranges in southwestern Idaho.
Mountain Home Air Force Base officials announced plans Monday to use planes to spray a herbicide on 3,200 acres of the Air Force's Saylor Creek Training Range in Owyhee County. The spray area is miles from the nearest residents.
The goal of the effort is to help prevent wildfires, conserve sagebrush and restore natural vegetation on the training range.
A C-130 military aircraft from the 910th Airlift Wing of Youngstown Air Reserve Base in Ohio is doing the spraying, beginning this week and continuing until Sept. 28.
The plane will fly about 100 to 150 feet above ground during a spray pass.
