Community grieving over loss of school teacher

Updated:

Investigators found 48-year-old Janet Holmes dead inside her home just after 3:00 AM Tuesday morning.

Investigators said a man called 911 and said his wife was injured.

"Things aren't going to be good at 3:00 in the morning," said Bill Phelps, Janet's neighbor for 15 years and a volunteer firefighter in Adrian, Oregon. He was paged the night of the murder. "The call on the radio said officer doing CPR and our medic out of Adrian was responding and the other EMS with higher training skills was headed their way."

Janet's husband Bill Holmes was arrested and charged for murder.

Nyssa School District officials notified parents of Janet's students about the tragedy.

Superintendent Donald Grotting said grief counselors were helping staff and students grieve over the death.

"Not so much on the incident, but on Janet and the good things she had done, and put a positive spin," said Grotting.

Jeanine Weeks started her career in Nyssa the same time as Janet in 1991, and knew her not only as an educator but as a friend.

She says Janet liked to laugh and wanted to make learning fun.

"Even a meeting a couple of weeks ago, she had some doll materials that she had to cut out for her kids.  And there she was cutting them out, not wasting anytime," said Weeks.

Holmes is scheduled for a Grand Jury later this month.
