Meridian's new City Hall has been open for less than a year. The same rings true for Vengaworks, a flexible office space provider in Meridian. Both buildings are LEED certified and energy efficient. Because of that, Idaho Power has awarded thousands of dollars in energy credits.
"It will incentivize a developer or building owner to make investments in its building to lessen its energy footprint so they'll pay to make a smarter more efficient building," says Vengaworks CEO Mark Gilbreath.
The money paid to both entities, $20,000 to Vengaworks and $40,000 to Meridian, is now being used to further green efforts in the community. It's being used in the form of grants to lure more green jobs to the city, green up existing office space, and build new green office space. Vengaworks is already a green place to work and they're offering up space as part of the grant. It's a move that officials hope will spread green ideals everywhere.
"To find their way into the rest of the building landscape," says Gilbreath. "To see the next generation of colleges, municipal buildings, and homes all built to these same standards."
