Authorities seize thousands of marijuana plants

Associated Press - August 14, 2009 4:34 PM ET

FAIRFIELD, Idaho (AP) - Authorities in central Idaho removed more than 10,000 marijuana plants from a remote area in the Sawtooth National Forest in Camas County.

A team of 30 law enforcement officials on Thursday gathered the plants which were then flown by helicopter to a less remote area where they were loaded on dump trucks to be buried at an undisclosed location.

Camas County Sheriff David Sanders says law enforcement officials have seized about 27,500 marijuana plants in the county in recent weeks from three illegal grow operations about seven miles apart.

He jokingly says his jurisdiction should be called "Cannabis County."

Authorities say the plants are worth about $1,000 each, making their value about $27.5 million.

Sanders says no one has been arrested but an investigation is continuing.
