Last night's lightning storm has sparked 20 new fires across the Payette National Forest. Forest officials tell Today's Channel 6 News that, although the fires are still small spot fires at this time, six of the twenty fires are staffed with firefighters. All the fires are burning in grass and timber.
The fires include:
-- Buck Horn Fire-approximately 12 miles southeast of McCall, near Buck Horn Summit.
-- Lake Basin Fire-approximately 10 miles east of Council.
-- Brush Lake Fire -approximately 9 miles northeast of McCall.
-- Blue Springs Fire - approximately 9 miles northwest of Cambridge and about 3 miles east of Hitt Mountain.
-- Iron Mt. Fire - approximately 16 miles west of Cambridge.
-- No Business Fire - approximately 10 miles northeast of Council and about 1 mile southwest of No Business Lookout.
-- Sheep Fire - approximately 6 miles southeast of Riggins.
The fires are staffed with smokejumpers, engines, hotshot crews, and handcrews with more resources ordered.
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the area and more scattered thunderstorms are expected today through this evening.
