LAVA HOT SPRINGS, Idaho (AP) - Voters in Lava Hot Springs say they are willing to pay a little more in taxes each year to upgrade the city's wastewater system.

Voters in the small, southeastern Idaho city approved a $7.8 million bond proposal Tuesday. The vote allows the city to proceed with plans to improve its wastewater treatment facilities. The new system should bring the city into compliance with new federal regulations and reduce nitrates that flow into the Portneuf River.

More than 300 households will pay an additional $60 to $100 annually to cover the cost of building a holding pond on a 270-acre site. Engineers also say the new system fits with the city's growth projections for the next 30 years.

The bond was approved by 90 voters, and rejected by 17.
