BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Organizers of an annual historic re-enactment of Oregon Trail river crossing say this summer's event will be the last.
For 24 years, actors, wagons and mules have crossed the Snake River near Three Island Crossing State Park near Glenn's Ferry in southwestern Idaho. The event celebrates the hundreds of river crossings that occurred in the area before 1869 when a ferry was added to help travelers along the Oregon Trail.
But organizers say an aging pool of participants, a lack of wagons and equipment have made it difficult to keep the event going.
Dale Smith, president of the Three Island Crossing Committee, says younger volunteers just haven't filled the void created by the retirement of older actors.
This year's event is scheduled for Aug. 8.
