Idaho faces tax revenue shortfall, but no crisis

Associated Press - July 10, 2009 3:54 PM ET

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Idaho was millions short of fiscal year 2009 tax revenue projections, but the Legislature and Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter have already assured the state won't face a budget crisis plaguing other states to start 2010.

By May, Idaho was $77 million short of its revenue projections. Final numbers for June, the last month of the fiscal year, aren't in, but officials say the shortfall climbed.

However, Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter has access to education and budget stabilization reserves to plug that hole, and state officials say that's easily enough to do the job, with millions to spare.

David Fulkerson, the state financial officer, says "The plan they put into place is going to be sufficient for what needs to happen."

That's a far cry from Ohio's $3.2 billion budget hole. And California is issuing IOUs instead of paying its bills on time.

Final Idaho tax revenue numbers are due next week.
