About 300 police cars due for deputy's funeral

Associated Press - July 10, 2009 8:14 AM ET

NEW MEADOWS, Idaho (AP) - Law enforcement officials expect about 300 police cars for next Tuesday's funeral procession to honor a deputy killed in a car crash this week.

The 35-year-old deputy, Monte "Leroy" Matthews of New Meadows, died from his injuries in Monday's collision on U.S. Highway 95.

Authorities are still investigating the incident, in which Matthews' car and a 2003 Honda Odyssey Minivan carrying four passengers collided. They were taken to area hospitals; their condition wasn't immediately available.

The procession, to include police and patrol cars from Idaho and elsewhere, starts at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday in Council and leads to New Meadows.

Canyon County Sheriff's Lieutenant Daren Ward, an organizer, says about 40 officers from his agency are expected to participate and will drive in publicly owned vehicles, though they won't be on duty.
