Ada County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Kuna man on a felony DUI charge after he drove off the road and hit a young cyclist Wednesday morning.
At 10:03 a.m., deputies were called to a crash on Linder Road just north of Deer Flat in Kuna. A witness reported that the driver of a GMC Yukon had hit a girl who had been riding her bicycle on Linder.
The cyclist, a 14-year-old girl, was riding north on Linder Road. The initial evidence gathered shows the teen was riding on the shoulder of the road and obeying traffic laws. The driver of the Yukon, later identified as William Charles Salter, 48, of Kuna, was also northbound when he veered several feet off the road and hit the cyclist.
The 14-year-old suffered cuts, scrapes and bruises, but did not appear to have any life-threatening injuries. Kuna paramedics responded and transported the teen to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, where she is being treated for her injuries.
Information collected at the scene gave deputies reason to believe Salter may have been under the influence of alcohol. After failing standard field sobriety tests, Salter was taken into custody. A breath test showed Salter to have a blood alcohol content of .11, above the legal limit of .08.
Salter was booked into the Ada County Jail on a charge of aggravated driving under the influence (a felony). He is expected to be arraigned on the charge Thursday afternoon in district court.
